Guide to Part-Time Jobs for International Students in Korea | D-2 & D-4 Visa Work Requirements

Many international students in Korea choose to work part-time to help cover living expenses and gain valuable experience. However, if you hold a D-2 (Student) visa or a D-4 (General Training) visa, you cannot work freely without meeting certain eligibility requirements and obtaining the necessary permission.

Eligibility for Part-Time Employment

To work part-time in Korea as an international student, you must meet the following requirements:

* Hold a D-2 (Student) or D-4 (General Training) visa.

* Demonstrate a required level of Korean language proficiency.

* Obtain permission for part-time employment from the Immigration Office.

In addition, some students who remain in Korea beyond their normal period of study may not be eligible for part-time employment.

Types of Part-Time Jobs Allowed

International students are generally permitted to engage in simple part-time work that is considered appropriate for students.

Examples include:

* Assisting at restaurants

* General office support

* Tourist information assistance

* Sales assistance at duty-free shops

Before starting a part-time job, students should check with their university's international office or the department responsible for international students to confirm whether the job is permitted and to understand the applicable regulations.

Permitted Working Hours

The number of hours you are allowed to work depends on several factors, including:

* Your academic program (Korean language course, associate degree, bachelor's degree, master's degree, or doctoral degree)

* Your Korean language proficiency (TOPIK, Korea Immigration and Integration Program (KIIP), or King Sejong Institute completion)

* Whether you attend a certified university

* Your academic performance

In other words, the permitted working hours are not the same for every international student. They vary depending on each student's academic program and qualifications.

Why Korean Language Proficiency Matters

Korean language ability is one of the requirements for obtaining permission for part-time employment.

The following qualifications are recognized:

* TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean)

* Korea Immigration and Integration Program (KIIP)

* King Sejong Institute Korean Language Program

Students with higher Korean language proficiency may be eligible to work longer hours. In addition, students attending certified universities or those with excellent academic performance may receive additional benefits.

Important Things to Check Before Working Part-Time

Finding a part-time job does not mean you can begin working immediately.

Before you start working, make sure to:

* Confirm that your visa allows part-time employment.

* Consult your university's international student office.

* Obtain approval from the Immigration Office.

* Follow the permitted working hours and job scope.

Working without permission or exceeding the approved working hours or job scope may affect your immigration status. Therefore, it is important to follow all applicable regulations before starting a part-time job.
