Making Korean friends: what actually worked for me

I've been in Korea for 5 months and making Korean friends was honestly harder than I expected. The international student bubble is real. But here's what eventually worked for me:

University clubs (동아리) - This was the game changer. I joined a hiking club at my university and instantly had a group of Korean friends. They were so welcoming and excited to practice English with me. We meet every weekend and it's become the highlight of my week.

Language exchange meetups - I go to a weekly English-Korean exchange at a cafe in Itaewon. The format is structured: 30 min English, 30 min Korean. Much better than apps because you meet the same people regularly.

Being a regular somewhere - I go to the same small restaurant near my university every week. The owner now knows my order and we chat in broken Korean/English. She even gave me free service (서비스) last time!

The biggest lesson: Korean friendships take time and consistency. Don't expect instant best friends. Show up regularly, make effort with the language, and be genuinely interested in the culture. The friendships you build here are worth it.

This is so relatable! Korean winter is no joke coming from Southeast Asia.
