1. Location — Seoul vs. Provincial Cities
Seoul offers abundant transportation, amenities, and cultural experiences, but rent is higher (average KRW 500,000–700,000/month). Provincial cities have lower rent (KRW 200,000–400,000) and tuition is often 10–20% cheaper.
Choose based on your budget and lifestyle.
2. Tuition — Check for Hidden Costs
Beyond the official tuition, check for the following:
- Registration/enrollment fee (KRW 100,000–200,000)
- Textbook costs (KRW 30,000–50,000 per semester)
- Health insurance (KRW 40,000–60,000/month)
- Dormitory fees (separate)
3. Class Hours — 20 Hours Per Week Is Standard
Most language institutes run 5 days a week, 4 hours a day, for a total of 20 hours. If this feels insufficient, supplement with study groups or tutoring.
Morning and afternoon sessions are available; morning sessions start early but leave your afternoons free.
4. Student Composition — Nationality Diversity
If many students share the same nationality, it becomes easy to speak in your native language, which reduces Korean exposure. A mix of students from diverse nationalities is much more conducive to Korean language practice.
Ask the language school about the current nationality ratio of students.
5. Dormitory Availability
Language school dormitories are cheaper (KRW 300,000–500,000/month) and safer than regular rentals. If you don't have friends or family in Korea, prioritize language schools that provide dormitories.
6. University-Affiliated vs. Independent Academies
- University-affiliated language institutes (SNU, Yonsei, Korea University, etc.): Links to degree programs, access to campus facilities, student ID issued. Strongly recommended if you aim to enter university
- Private language academies: Lower tuition, intensive courses available. Suitable for short-term travel/cultural experience purposes
7. TOPIK Preparation Curriculum
If your goal is university admission, check whether there is a TOPIK preparation class. In particular, reading/writing intensive courses are essential for aiming for TOPIK Level 4 or higher.

- ✅ Total cost calculation within budget (tuition + dormitory + living expenses)
- ✅ Verify language support beyond Korean (English announcements, English counseling)
