TOPIK Study Strategy by Level — From 1 to 6

Understanding the TOPIK Exam Structure

TOPIK is divided into two types:

• TOPIK I: Levels 1-2. Listening + Reading (200 points total)
• TOPIK II: Levels 3-6. Listening + Writing + Reading (300 points total)

TOPIK Levels 1-2 — Beginner Stage

Goal: Basic daily communication (greetings, ordering, simple conversations)

Essential Grammar:

• Particles (이/가, 은/는, 을/를)
• Basic tenses (-습니다, -았/었/였-)
• Negation (안 + verb, -지 않다)

Vocabulary: Memorize 1,500-2,000 words

Recommended Textbooks: Seoul National University Korean 1A/1B or Yonsei Korean 1

TOPIK Levels 3-4 — Intermediate Stage

Goal: Daily and work-related conversations, partial understanding of newspaper articles

Essential Grammar:

• Connective endings (-(으)면서, -(으)니까, -(으)려고)
• Passive/causative forms (-이/히/리/기-)
• Adnominal forms (-(으)ㄴ/는/(으)ㄹ)

Vocabulary: 4,000-5,000 words

Writing Prep: Practice writing 300-character descriptive essays

TOPIK Levels 5-6 — Advanced Stage

Goal: Understanding specialized fields, academic writing, news/documentary listening

Essential Grammar:

• Advanced connective endings (-(으)ㄴ/는 반면에, -기 마련이다)
• Speculation/intention expressions (-(으)ㄹ 법하다, -(으)ㄹ 따름이다)
• Sino-Korean, native Korean, and idiomatic expressions

Vocabulary: 7,000-10,000 words (including technical terms)

Writing Prep: Practice 600-700 character argumentative essays

Key: Develop a habit of reading news articles and academic papers

TOPIK past exam questions are available for free download from the official website.

• Get the 5 most recent exams
• Solve them under actual exam conditions with a timer
• Analyze wrong answers to identify weak points
• Repeat practice on the same question types

Estimated Study Time by Level

• Levels 1-2: 2-3 months, 2 hours/day
• Levels 3-4: 6-10 months, 3 hours/day
• Levels 5-6: 1-2 years, 4+ hours/day
